Young people celebrate building success

13.12.2007

More than 450 children have improved their skills at Watford Learning Centre, thanks to a successful make over from local sponsors, Community Building Services (CBS) Ltd.

CBS, a local building and maintenance company and sponsors of the Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust, extended their sponsorship to the centre and donated £10,000 worth of materials and labour to make sure the centre was open in time for the new term.

To celebrate the achievements of the latest Playing for Success intake, children, parents, staff and sponsors, CBS, gathered for a special presentation evening this month.  A total of 51 children received certificates and attendance medals from Watford FC players Douglas Rinaldi and Cedric Avinel, recognising their hard work in gaining new literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.

The centre, both a Herts Local Authority registered school and study support centre, uses sport to motivate young poeple to learn.  It was relocated from the Rookery Stand to Watford CSE Trust Office, based in Vicarage Road Stadium, during August 2007.

The work included full refurbishment of the building, from decoration to plumbing and ceilings to flooring.  The conversion from office block to learning centre was completed by construction of customised computer desks, making the centre indistinguishable from its humble beginnings as a local shop.

Julia Bateson, Centre Manager, was impressed with the work carried out.  She said: "The CBS guys were a pleasure to work with and performed minor miracles to ensure the centre was ready on time.  The way they communicated and turned the place into a learning centre has been great."

John Bell, Managing Director of  CBS, said: "We want to make a difference to our community because we're a local business.  Our work at the centre was a perfect opportunity to do this.

"We're delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate with the children that our work has directly impacted and wish the staff and students many more successful years at the centre."
